A reading path ordered by dependency. The first three steps establish a shared vocabulary and shared criteria; the sections may then be consulted as needed.

How to Use This Path

The content of this site is interdependent. Without a grasp of fibre and structural classification it is difficult to understand where the differences between fabrics come from, and without a grasp of measuring methods a discussion of size has no starting point. The four steps below follow that order of dependency.

Each step states the question it addresses and the page it points to. Reading all of them takes about an hour, but each step can be used on its own.

§ 1Step One: Establish the Vocabulary

The question addressed: why can two garments of identical composition feel entirely different in wear?

The goal of step one
What to readWhat you can do afterwards
Fabric & CraftDistinguish the two sets of variables, fibre class and fabric structure, and understand why a composition label cannot predict hand-feel

§ 2Step Two: Master Measurement

The question addressed: how can a set of figures be obtained that is consistent on every occasion, and why can a nominal size not be carried across brands?

The goal of step two
What to readWhat you can do afterwards
Size & FitCarry out the four basic measurements independently, and understand the structural limits of sizing systems

§ 3Step Three: Learn to Care

The question addressed: why do garments lose elasticity, snag or distort, and which stages can be avoided?

The goal of step three
What to readWhat you can do afterwards
Washing & CareDecide how to wash and care for a garment by material, and know which stage carries the greatest risk

§ 4Step Four: Extend as Needed

The first three steps establish shared premises. After that, readers may move into the journal according to interest or a specific question. For the editorial policy, and the grounds on which the writing rests, see About This Journal.
